Interview Tips

Once you've secured an interview, preparing for the meeting is key. The following steps provide some insights to successfully making the right impression during your interview:

Be Informed

  • Know exactly what it is you are applying for, and what you will be asked to deliver.
  • Thoroughly understand the nature of the company's operations, the range of products produced, and how you can contribute.
  • Get to know the company's main competitors and anything else about the industry.

Appearance and Posture

  • Do not slouch and sit up straight. Overconfidence or nervousness is easily detected.
  • Dress in business attire that is comfortable and be well groomed.
  • Be polite and do not get distracted by a tough question.

Build Rapport

  • Show enthusiasm by arriving 5 to 10 minutes before the scheduled start.
  • Demonstrate interest in the job and remain attentive throughout the interview.
  • Be honest. Misrepresentations can only hurt your chances of getting the job.
  • Show that you understand and care about the company’s needs, not simply your own.

Project a Positive Image

  • Have a positive attitude and demonstrate confidence in your ability to do the job.
  • Never tell people what you cannot do, tell them what you can.
  • Salary, perks, and benefits generally should not be discussed at the interview. There will be time for this after the offer is made.

Tough Questions

  • Answer tough questions briefly and directly.
  • Take time to think before answering. A pause can make your answer seem more profound.
  • Try not to get rattled and remain positive with your replies.

Ask Questions

  • Always be prepared to ask the interviewer at least three questions.
  • Think of questions to ask before the interview starts and make one up based on what you have learned during the interview.
  • Make a good impression with questions like:
    • Why is the job available?
    • What is the company policy on promotion, and performance evaluation?
    • What makes your company/product/this position unique?
    • What are the job functions?

Once the interview is complete and the interviewer walks you to the door, make sure to thank them for an opportunity to meet with them. Follow up on your interview approximately 5-7 working days after your interview with either a thank you note or a quick telephone call. This is not to be a pushy; rather, just an inquiry on how things went and if there would be any further interviews or opportunities.
